40 Years of the Gledhill Trophy ( Part 1).

Written by
May 2007 sees the 40th Final of the Gledhill Cup, the BFSFA's premier knock-out competition.  In the first of a four part series we look back at previous finals.  We start with the period 1987/88 through to 1996/97.  Final tables, top scorers and Divisional Cup winners are also often included.

Firstly, sincere thanks to BFSFA secretary Peter Collins for giving me access to his treasured collection of Gledhill Cup final programmes.

Unfortunately, I'm still missing fourteen programmes and would be extremely grateful if anybody can help me by locating and loaning any of these missing programmes.  This will allow me to complete the series whilst doing full justice to all the teams and players who have participated in this great competition.

The programmes I'm missing are ; 1967/68, 1970/71, 1971/72, 1972/73, 1973/74, 1974/75, 1975/76, 1976/77, 1977/78, 1978/79, 1980/81, 1982/83, 1991/92 and 1992/93.  If you can help please E-Mail me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .  Thanks.

Current BFSFA Chairman Nigel Hough and Keith Gledhill provide an excellent background as to the history of the competition.  This is taken from the 25th Anniversary Dinner souvenir programme in 1993.  Thanks to Stewart Rowe for putting most of it together and saving me lots of time in preparing this series of articles.

Golden days - Nine Divisions and well over 100 teams in the Alliance.  My team Porters finished rock bottom in their first season.

Keith Johnstone plays in the 1990/91 final.  Can he reach another with Bloomfield Vets in May ?

The second top scorer in 4B was a hell of a finisher.  32 goals wasn't bad for a side finishing fourth bottom of the Alliance !

Programme missing for the 1991/92 final but Mike Harley played for the Dunes.  He also went on to play for McDonald Property in 2003/04 and has a good chance of reaching a third final with Red Rose Catering FC this season.

The 1993 '25 Year ' Anniversary Dinner programme cover.  The 1992/93 final programme is also missing.  The game was played between Mammas No 4 FC and Fleetwood Car Centre FC with Mammas winning the game 1-0.

Some interesting statistics based on the first 25 finals.  Quilligan's current liner Brian Croft along with David Kirham the men with most final appearances in 1993.

This programe is not complete as the West Coast pen portraits are unfortunately missing.  West Coast Transmissions FC went on to win the game 1-0.

A 16 year old Craig Byrom is in the squad.

Final score : Mammas FC 2 - 0 Lytham Corinthians FC.

Andy Hill - he was young once.

Quilligan's FC webmaster Leigh Dawson gets a mention.

Final score : West Coast Transmissions FC 2 - 1 Viking Hotel FC (Andy Hill)

Gary Collings features in his ninth final.  Fat Jack Lee Feehan in the squad.

Final score :  Mammas FC 3 - 0 West Coast Transmissions FC

Part 2 to follow in the near future dependant on programes being located.
